Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Noise Walls

Structural Design

Delivering resilient, low-impact noise wall solutions for one of Australia’s most significant freight logistics hubs.

The Moorebank Intermodal Terminal Noise Walls project formed a key component of a nationally significant freight infrastructure development.

CSS was engaged to complete the detailed structural design of new noise mitigation walls within a complex, operational brownfield terminal environment. Designed to protect surrounding residential and commercial communities from the increased rail and heavy vehicle activity associated with the intermodal precinct, the structures needed to meet strict acoustic, structural, safety, and durability requirements while integrating seamlessly with adjacent road, rail and terminal assets. CSS delivered fully compliant, constructible designs that aligned with the client’s program, approvals process and infrastructure interfaces, ensuring predictable and safe delivery within a critical freight corridor.

Technical Achievements

CSS developed customised wall solutions that addressed highly variable foundation conditions, tight spatial constraints, and the challenges of ongoing freight operations. Advanced structural modelling was used to optimise wall geometry, enhance long-term performance and reduce material quantities without compromising structural integrity. The team incorporated modular construction principles to simplify installation, minimise disruption to live rail and terminal operations, and support staged delivery. CSS’s integrated approach to structural design, constructability, and interface coordination enabled efficient delivery and risk reduction across the project.

Benefits to the Client

The design provided the client with fast-tracked approvals, reduced construction risk, and improved delivery certainty through robust coordination and clear interface management. Optimised materials and modular design resulted in cost efficiencies while maintaining durability and acoustic performance. The completed noise walls enhance amenity for local communities by reducing noise and vibration impacts, while supporting the wider terminal’s goal of enabling a cleaner, more efficient rail-based freight network. CSS’s technical precision and responsive collaboration ensured safe, efficient and value-focused outcomes across all stages of design.
