Led by Vince Scolaro, the Bridge Engineering team has been working with organisations and governments delivering new design, proof engineering and independent review services on both greenfield and brownfield sites.

Sustainability in design is at the forefront of what we deliver

 

We believe that where possible, re-use of existing infrastructure and its integration into projects provides a tangible response to help deliver sustainable projects for our clients and the community. This is done through:

  • Minimisation of new materials required by extending the design life of existing infrastructure assets.

  • Minimisation of construction impacts to users of the infrastructure asset through carefully planned construction activities that can be carried out without prolonged closure of the asset.

  • Optimisation of the principles of sustainable design - environmental health, social equity and economic viability.

  • Production of integrated designs that help identify and manage future project risks and better extend asset service life.

The CSS Bridge Engineering team works in partnership with clients to provide technical advisory, detailed design, and construction phase support services to assist with the delivery of any bridge project.

Innovation

Innovation is our key driver in delivering sustainability for our clients and the community

Our team has a long history in delivering innovative solutions to complex bridge problems, specifically existing bridges. This expertise has been gained through solving complex structural issues on some of Sydney’s and NSW most crucial infrastructure bridge assets including:

  • Maintenance and upgrade of an iconic bridge in Sydney

  • Sydney Harbour Tunnel southern portal connection and Conservatorium Road Bridge Modifications

  • Cross-City Tunnel – Cowper Wharf Road Modification works

  • General Holmes Drive Tunnel Roof strengthening to accommodate the A380 aircraft.

  • The new rail bridge over the M2 Motorway and Devlin’s Creek (part of the Epping to Thornleigh Third Tracking Project).

  • Pacific Highway upgrade projects including:

    • Raleigh Deviation Project (Bellingen Road Arch Bridge).

    • W2B Bridges including remedial works to the southern abutment of the new Clarence River North Arm Bridge.

  • LH Ford Bridge in Dubbo strengthening and maintenance upgrade of the main balanced cantilever river spans.

 
 

PROCESS

How we deliver

Our leaders are “HANDS -ON”. They are involved in all projects at all stages to ensure that the best technical solutions are not only chosen and developed, but also are delivered in a professional and in a manner that minimises potential for rework.

Our team has access to all forms of analysis packages comprising simple hand methods, linear elastic frame analysis software and full non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. All structural models are checked against simple calculations and industry experience to ensure that final designs are not subject to the garbage in, garbage out syndrome.

 
 
 

Bridge
Design

Structural Design services for complex, standard and bridge rehabilitation at all project phases, include:

i. Investigation

ii. Concept development, optioneering and assessment

iii. Detailed design

iv. Digital engineering and documentation

v. Construction support services.


Proof
Engineering and Technical Advisory

i. Independent review and certification of designs to ensure compliance with standards and project briefs

ii. Structural forensics and failure mode assessments.


Load Rating and Condition Assessments

Load rating assessment of existing bridge structures including:

i. Assessment of the bridge’s current condition

ii. Assessment of the bridge’s capacity against a standard vehicle load configuration in both its original and current condition

iii. Static and Dynamic load testing for validation of load rating.

 
 

Environmental Compliance Support

Leveraging from our Environmental team, we can provide environmental compliance support for any bridge or structural project being carried out.


Safety-in-Design and Constructability

Each bridge has its own unique construction methodology.  The team can provide expertise and advice to evaluate options to ensure that all project risks are identified and mitigated. This is carried out for all life cycle phases of the asset from construction, through to operations and final demolition.
