Specialist Engineering Assessment
Independent verification protecting critical Sydney Water infrastructure through rigorous structural, hydraulic and geotechnical assessment.
The Link Road Specialist Engineering Assessment (SEA) involved the independent verification of a proposed development located above a major Sydney Water underground pipeline.
CSS was engaged by Hyve Design and Sydney Water to evaluate the potential structural, hydraulic and geotechnical impacts of the works, ensuring the integrity and long-term performance of the existing asset. The assessment focused on identifying risks, validating design assumptions, and confirming that proposed construction activities could safely interface with the pipeline without compromising operational reliability or future maintenance requirements.
Technical Achievements
CSS undertook a comprehensive verification of the design proposals, applying advanced assessment techniques to quantify the structural, hydraulic and geotechnical impacts on the existing underground pipeline. The team reviewed load effects from the proposed development, assessed construction-induced risks, evaluated settlement and serviceability considerations, and confirmed compliance with Sydney Water’s asset protection requirements. Mitigation strategies were identified to manage loading, reduce construction impacts, and maintain pipeline stability throughout both the construction phase and asset lifecycle.
Benefits to the Client
The verification process enabled Hyve Design and Sydney Water to proceed with confidence, confirming that the existing pipeline could be safely retained, thereby avoiding costly relocation or replacement works. CSS’s assessment supported informed decision-making, improved compliance, and reduced project risk while ensuring a development outcome that maintained the pipeline’s integrity and operational reliability. By validating the suitability of the existing infrastructure, the project also minimised excavation, material use and construction waste, contributing to more sustainable and cost-effective delivery.
