The M5 Westbound Traffic Upgrade is a major $380 million TfNSW initiative targeting improved traffic flow, safety and network capacity along one of Sydney’s most heavily utilised motorway corridors.
CSS was engaged by Transport for NSW to provide specialist tender technical support with a focus on assessing and validating the bridge and underpass engineering solutions proposed by tenderers. Working within a live brownfield environment, the project required close consideration of constructability, integration with existing motorway assets, and maintaining operational continuity across a critical strategic freight route. CSS provided high-level technical assessments, compliance reviews and engineering guidance to support a strong and defensible tender assessment.
Technical Achievements
CSS undertook the technical evaluation of tendered bridge and underpass concepts, reviewing structural configurations, construction staging and interface impacts on existing motorway assets. The team applied value engineering principles to assess compliance with TfNSW design standards, identify risks, and validate the feasibility and safety of proposed solutions. CSS also streamlined the risk-based engineering review process, enhancing response clarity and improving tender responsiveness by ensuring that designs were buildable, efficient and technically robust within the constraints of the brownfield environment.
