Warringah Freeway upgrade project -Alfred Street Bridge
Alfred Street Bridge Detailed Design Lead of a three-span Super-Tee girder bridge with portal framed piers and reinforced soil abutments. This bridge is being delivered for the Jacob/Arcadis design team as part of the Warringah Freeway Upgrade Project.
Eugenio Mayol as the bridge lead was instrumental in driving the design team to deliver an extremely efficient design pushing the 1515mm deep Super-Tee girders to their maximum width and span limit within a durability challenged environment.
Technical innovations achieved
The bridge design incorporates frame action both longitudinally and transversely to accommodate vehicular collision loads as well as unforeseen seismic loads. The location of this bridge is such that increased durability considerations were required. The design was optimised using advanced analysis techniques to ensure that the minimum number of girders with their maximum span was adopted.
CSS were engaged by Jacobs to assist with the delivery of this extremely important section of road infrastructure to enhance not only the safety of users but will facilitate integration of future projects within this precinct.
Benefits to the client
Benefits included the construction of a shorter length bridge structure with associated lower costs, lower impacts to the local road network, lower impacts to both pedestrian and cyclists with shorter tie-ins at the northern end as well as shorter cable length because of a shorter bridge structure at the northern end.
