Lester Kropp Bridge
Structural Engineering, Options Assessment
Lester Kropp bridge upgrade progress
Silverstrand engaged Civil Structures Studio (CSS) to undertake an options assessment to investigate alternative scour protection and embankment stabilising measures following a slip of a temporary embankment during construction.
The Lester Kropp bridge is a new, dual carriageway, 3 span concrete (PSC) road bridge totalling 60m over the Stanley River at Lake Somerset.
The project involved reviewing the design documentation of multiple disciplines such as geotechnical, structural and hydraulic as well as co-ordination with the construction team to identify and compare several solutions.
Innovations / Efficiencies:
The CSS proposed design solutions had to address technical aspects such as residual scour protection, embankment stability, Bridge structural design impacts, constructability, maintenance and construction program & cost.
Outcomes / Benefits:
CSS proposed 3 alternative options and compared these against the original design intent, and the clients proposed option to inform decision making. The technical memo and recommendations provided by CSS was presented to the end client, Somerset Regional Council, and was key to triggering further design gateways to finalise a solution with the original design.
Sustainability:
The proposed alternative options considered a reduction in quantity of materials as one of the key requirements and therefore led to a reduced embodied carbon intensity for the finished structure.
